Welcome to the Jungle

As I am writing this, I am sitting on a plane heading back to my native Caracas, Venezuela to begin a new part of my life.
After two years living a sort of dream, receiving some of the best public policy education available surrounded by some of the brightest and best people in the world, I have decided to go back home. In the next few months I plan to join a mayoral or gubernatorial candidate and work with him in the campaign.
I decided to go back for three main reasons. The first reason is that I feel a huge responsibility to do so. I have been lucky enough to receive an excellent education, to be raised in a loving family, to explore the world. Now I feel it is my time to give back. I realize I could have interpreted this as giving back to my parents or to my church or to the homeless people in the corner, but for one reason or the other, the responsibility I feel is with the country that has given me so much. I want to be part of the solution. My country has been going downhill practically since the day I was born. Things gave just kept on getting worse, and now the country I love seems to be falling apart in so many ways. The easy way out is to leave like everybody who has the chance seems to be doing. I prefer the difficult path, I say we change things so our sons and brothers and sisters don’t want to leave. I say we solve our problems ourselves.
Third, because I was just born for this. The timing is right, the opportunity is there and I can’t imagine doing anything else that’s this worthwhile with my time right now.
I’m excited but scared. I have no job, no idea what I’ll do on Monday, no income. Let’s just see what life has in stock for me.
